Summer Fungal Infections Rising In India: Beware of Sweaty Clothes, Damp Skin And Self-Medication
Doctors are witnessing a rise in fungal skin infections during summer and humid weather, with experts warning that everyday habits like wearing sweaty clothes for too long, poor drying after bathing and misuse of steroid creams may worsen the problem.
Dermatologists across India are reporting a spike in fungal skin infections as temperatures and humidity levels rise during summer. Experts say the combination of sweat, heat and damp skin creates the perfect environment for fungal growth, especially in tropical regions like India.

According to dermatologist, fungal infections commonly affect areas where sweat gets trapped, including the underarms, groin folds, under the breasts, feet and between the toes. Conditions such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and fungal rashes around skin folds become more common during this season.
Doctors say several daily habits unknowingly worsen these infections.
One of the biggest triggers is staying in sweaty clothes for long periods. Tight jeans, synthetic gym wear, damp undergarments and socks that trap moisture can increase fungal growth. Experts advise people to wear loose-fitting cotton clothes and avoid tight garments during humid weather.
Another common mistake is not drying the body properly after bathing. Dermatologists stress that skin folds, underarms, groin areas and spaces between the toes should be dried carefully because even slight dampness can encourage fungal infections.
Doctors have also warned against sharing towels, soaps and other personal hygiene products, as fungal infections can spread through contaminated fabrics and moist surfaces.
A major concern highlighted by experts is the misuse of over-the-counter steroid creams. Many people purchase combination creams from local chemists without medical advice. While such creams may temporarily reduce itching and redness, dermatologists warn that the fungus continues to grow underneath, making infections more stubborn and difficult to treat later.
Health experts and medical agencies have previously cautioned against irrational use of steroid-based creams for fungal infections.
Dermatologists recommend simple preventive steps during summer:
- Change sweaty clothes immediately
- Wear breathable cotton fabrics
- Dry clothes under direct sunlight
- Avoid damp shoes and socks
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Keep skin folds dry
- Avoid self-medication
Doctors also advise maintaining good immunity and nutrition, including healthy vitamin D levels, though research on direct fungal susceptibility is still ongoing.
Experts say fungal infections may initially appear minor, but untreated infections can spread, recur repeatedly and significantly affect quality of life during humid months.
