Sunil Grover Shares Family’s Reaction to Romancing Ranbir Kapoor and Son’s Awkwardness About His Cross-Dressing
The comedian opens up about his family’s take on his on-screen antics and reveals his son’s initial discomfort.
Sunil Grover, known for his comic brilliance and cross-dressing antics, recently ended his seven-year-long feud with Kapil Sharma to return to “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” now premiering on Netflix. Grover plays the character of Dafli in the show, where he made headlines for a humorous romantic skit with Ranbir Kapoor, who appeared as the first guest of the new season. The moment became even more iconic when Alia Bhatt, Ranbir’s wife, joined the show in the second season and was shown a clip of Grover’s character romancing her husband.
In a candid interview, Grover shared his family’s reaction to his on-screen romance with Ranbir and his comedic cross-dressing. “They know the reality; I don’t wear sarees like that,” Grover said with a laugh. “They’re happy and okay with it, no issues. They had to adjust a little, though.”
Grover’s son initially felt awkward about his father’s cross-dressing roles but has since become more comfortable. “No one minds. Initially, my son felt a little awkward, but now he’s fine with it,” Grover added, highlighting that his family understands the nature of his work and supports his comedic performances.
During a lighthearted moment on the show, co-star Rajiv Thakur jokingly asked Grover if his wife ever noticed her sarees missing, to which Grover playfully responded that he only borrows her old ones.
In addition to playing Dafli, Grover portrays other quirky characters on “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” including an aircraft mechanical engineer known for his over-the-top antics with guests. The show’s new episodes drop every Saturday on Netflix and it continues to entertain audiences with Grover’s unique comedic flair.
During the season 2 premiere, Grover, dressed as Dafli, hilariously posed as Ranbir Kapoor’s “ex” during a skit with Alia Bhatt. Kapil Sharma set the stage by teasing Alia with, “There was a girl in Ranbir’s life,” prompting an intrigued Alia to play along. Sunil, in character, even performed a breakup song, leaving everyone, including Alia, in fits of laughter.
Grover’s return to the series and his family’s support underline the humorous yet relatable dynamics that keep audiences coming back for more, proving that sometimes, laughter truly is the best medicine—even at home.
