Pune: According to reports, garlic prices have skyrocketed, reaching 300-400 in the retail market. This is due to a decrease in supply from Nashik and Pune, the major garlic-producing regions, caused by adverse weather conditions. As a result, wholesale traders from Mumbai have resorted to sourcing supplies from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, which has led to increased logistic costs.

The scarcity of garlic supply has led to a significant increase in its price, nearly doubling in the past few weeks. Traders at the APMC yard in Vashi anticipate that this situation will persist without improvement shortly.

The recent increase in the price range of a key bulb has had a direct impact on consumers, who are now experiencing financial strain. Previously sold at 100-150 per kg, the bulb is now being sold at a higher price of 150-250 per kg in the APMC wholesale yards. Consequently, the retail price has surged to 300-400 per kg. Additionally, the wholesale market is currently receiving a lower number of vehicles, with only 15-20 trucks and minivans arriving daily, compared to the usual 25-30 vehicles.

The influx of arrivals from the southern states has also significantly depleted, contributing to a shortage in supply that has driven prices up. APMC traders have reported a substantial decrease in supplies from Ooty and Malappuram, which has led to inflation.

In comparison to last month, prices have reached their highest point of the season, causing disruptions to monthly household budgets.

Due to saturated stock and limited production caused by insufficient rainfall during the monsoon season and unseasonal rain later on, local supply has been constrained, forcing a reliance on supplies from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, which has proven to be costly.
