Tailors Banned From Measuring Girls' Clothing Measurements: What’s Behind This Proposal In UP ?
The Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has unveiled a series of pioneering measures aimed at enhancing women’s safety in public and commercial spaces. In a meeting held on October 28 in Lucknow, commission members discussed proposals to restrict male tailors from taking women’s measurements and barring men from training women at gyms and yoga sessions.
These measures are part of a broader effort to strengthen security for women, with female security personnel mandated on school buses and female staff in women’s clothing stores. Commission member Maneesha Ahlawat emphasized that discussions are preliminary, and feasibility studies are underway.
Shamli district probation officer Hamid Hussain has already begun implementing these guidelines, directing establishments to adopt key measures. These include mandatory female trainers in women’s gyms, drama, and yoga centers, and installing CCTV systems with DVR capabilities.
Additionally, school buses must have a female security guard or teacher present, while boutique centers must employ female tailors for taking women’s measurements under CCTV monitoring. Coaching centers and stores selling women-specific clothing must also install CCTV surveillance and provide proper restroom facilities.
Local social worker welcomed the initiative, stating that these measures will create a supportive environment for women across the state. The commission’s proposals will be submitted to the government for policy implementation once approved, marking a significant step towards enhancing women’s safety in Uttar Pradesh.
