Cotton candy enthusiasts in Puducherry faced disappointment as the Union Territory’s government imposed a ban on the sale of this beloved treat. Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan took to Instagram to alert the public, particularly parents, about the presence of toxic chemicals in cotton candy.

In a video appeal, Soundararajan emphasized that food items containing color additives, especially those harmful to children, should be avoided. The ban was enforced after food safety officials detected the presence of the harmful chemical ‘Rhodamine-B’ in cotton candy sold in Puducherry.

Rhodamine-B, a synthetic dye with vibrant pink-to-red color properties, is commonly used in various industries. In India, it is sometimes illegally used as a cheaper food coloring agent, particularly in regions with lax food safety regulations.

The ban extends to other cities and states, with Tamil Nadu conducting raids on cotton candy shops in prominent locations like Marina Beach and Elliot Beach. Kerala State Health Minister, Veena George, has also announced similar inspections in Kerala.

Rhodamine B, known for its carcinogenic properties, can cause skin and eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and allergic reactions. Ingesting large quantities over a short period may lead to adverse effects on the liver and kidneys.

While the ban is in effect, sellers can resume cotton candy sales upon obtaining a quality certificate from the food safety department. Soundararajan emphasized the importance of swift certification for business operations to resume. Until then, the sale of cotton candy remains prohibited in Puducherry.
