Tata Nexon EV Catches Fire at Service Center, Owner Still Paying EMIs; No Resolution After 8 Months
In a troubling incident that raises questions about the safety of electric vehicles and post-sale accountability in India, a Tata Nexon EV caught fire while undergoing repairs at an authorized service center. Despite the total loss of the vehicle, the owner continues to pay EMIs and has received no resolution or compensation after more than eight months.
The owner, speaking to auto news portal Rushlane, described how the issue began with a minor accident during heavy rain. “There was a large water-filled pit due to ongoing construction. My car got stuck and wouldn’t start, so I had it towed to the service center the next day,” he said.
However, during repairs at the service center, the car reportedly caught fire. Initial findings pointed to battery damage as the cause. The service center allegedly offered a verbal assurance to arrange a replacement vehicle, but according to the owner, no such support has materialized since the incident.
Adding to his woes, United India Insurance denied the full insured declared value (IDV) claim, offering compensation only for the battery. “IDV is a pre-agreed value during policy issuance. If the IDV is Rs 100, the expected claim would typically be Rs 80 to Rs 90. But I received an offer only for the battery cost,” he explained.
As the fire occurred while the vehicle was in the custody of the service center, liability for the incident technically lies with them. However, the customer claims he has received no help or response from either Tata Motors or the service center.
With no insurance payout and no action from the manufacturer or service provider, the owner is left paying monthly EMIs for a car that no longer exists. “Despite everything, the EMIs are still being deducted,” he said, expressing his frustration.
The incident gained public attention after being featured on the popular YouTube channel Baiju N Nair, which has over 1.2 million subscribers. Discussions around the issue have also spread on social platforms like Reddit, where users are urging the owner to take legal action.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Tata Motors or United India Insurance regarding the incident.
