Tenant Verification Goes Online in Maharashtra by February-End
The new system will eliminate the need for tenants to visit police stations, streamlining the verification process across 44,000 villages.
Tenants in Maharashtra will no longer need to visit police stations for verification, as the state registration department plans to roll out an integrated e-registration system by February-end. The new system will connect data from 1,130 police stations across 44,000 villages.
The initiative delayed earlier due to software updates and technical glitches, aims to streamline tenant verification by linking the registration department’s database with police stations. Once implemented, police stations can directly access e-registration data, eliminating the need for physical visits.
Currently, property owners in rural areas must submit tenant details, including names, addresses, photographs, and two references, to local police stations along with e-registered documents. Pune’s resident deputy collector Jyoti Kadam recently issued a directive mandating this process in rural areas, especially to monitor floating populations near industrial zones.
While Pune district had an online tenant verification system earlier, it became defunct due to software issues. Officials said that, for now, tenant data is shared with police in Excel sheets, with 85,000-90,000 leave and licence agreements e-registered monthly.
The upgraded system, replacing the 2019 version, will require additional details like a tenant’s five-year residential history and permanent address. This ensures thorough verification without citizens needing to visit police stations.
State officials confirmed that mapping police stations with village-level data is underway. Once operational, the system will enhance tenant monitoring while reducing procedural hassles for landlords and tenants statewide.
