Thackeray urges Maharashtra Assembly Speaker to decide on MLAs’ disqualification soon

A day after the Supreme Court verdict on last year’s political crisis in Maharashtra the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday urged state Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar to take a decision on the disqualification of 16 MLAs at the earliest.

Last year’s political crisis had resulted in the collapse of the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by him following a rebellion by Eknath Shinde, who later joined hands with the BJP to become the chief minister.

while addressing the media at his residence S Thackeray also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “tell your people to resign and ask them to face elections”, a day after the Supreme Court said that the then Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s decision to call for a floor test that ultimately toppled the MVA government was not in accordance with the law.

The gift of life to the 16 MLAs is temporary because the Supreme Court has given a ‘reasonable time’ and it has limitations. The Speaker must take his decision at the earliest,” Thackeray further said.

Thackeray’s party colleague Anil Parab said they will write to Speaker Nawerkar urging him to take a call on the matter at the earliest. Reacting to this Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar will take the decision on the disqualification of MLAs and other issues at an appropriate time and if anyone tries to pressure him in any way, then it won’t be compatible with the country’s free and fair legal process
