Pet cat’s alert leads to discovery of 3–4 ft python in balcony; safely rescued and released

A surprising and tense situation unfolded in Thane’s Waghbil area after a python was found living on the 21st floor of a residential tower for nearly five days, leaving residents shocked and fearful.

The incident took place at a high-rise building near Ghodbunder Road, where a roughly 3–4 foot-long python was discovered curled up in plant pots on a balcony.

How The Python Was Discovered

The unusual presence of the reptile came to light due to the alertness of a pet cat in the house. Residents noticed unusual movement and disturbance near the balcony area after the cat began reacting repeatedly.

On Friday morning, when the family checked the balcony more carefully, they spotted the python hidden among the pots. Snake rescuers were immediately informed and rushed to the spot.

Rescue Operation

Initially, a search operation was conducted but the snake was not found right away. However, during a detailed inspection of the flat, the python was eventually located sitting quietly near the plants.

Trained snake rescuers safely captured the reptile using proper techniques. Following forest department guidelines, it was later released into a nearby green area, away from human habitation.

How Did It Reach The 21st Floor?

Experts believe the python may have entered the building from nearby forested areas around Ghodbunder Road, which is known for its natural habitat and wildlife presence.

There is also a strong possibility that the snake climbed up through the building’s drainage pipeline, eventually reaching the 21st-floor balcony.

Panic Among Residents

The incident created fear among residents, especially families with children, as the idea of a python staying unnoticed for days inside a high-rise raised safety concerns.

Wildlife experts say such incidents are becoming more frequent due to rapid urbanisation and shrinking natural habitats, forcing animals to stray into residential areas.

Bigger Concern

The Ghodbunder region has seen significant development in recent years, leading to increased human-wildlife encounters. Experts warn that unless ecological balance is maintained, such incidents may continue to occur.

This episode serves as a reminder of the need for awareness, caution, and coexistence with wildlife in rapidly expanding urban spaces.
