That ITR Refund Feeling: Have You Got Yours Yet? Here's How to Check Online

There’s a certain odd feeling that comes right after filing your Income Tax Return. It’s a mix of relief and curiosity — a thought that keeps coming back: “Will I get a refund?” and “When will it come?” For many, this refund feels like a bonus, whether to pay off pending expenses, save a little more, or simply feel rewarded for being tax-compliant. But when days go by without a message or bank notification, that curiosity slowly turns into concern.

If you’re in this exact situation, wondering whether your refund has been processed or if it’s stuck somewhere, you’re not alone. The good news is that the Income Tax Department has made it simple to track your refund status online. But before we get into how to do that, let’s understand how the refund process works.

When you file your ITR and complete the e-verification process, the Income Tax Department starts reviewing your return. Only after e-verification does the refund process begin. This is a critical step that many taxpayers miss — without e-verification, your return isn’t considered complete, and the refund won’t be processed at all. Once everything is in order, the department usually takes about 7 to 21 working days to process your return. However, the refund amount may take 4 to 5 weeks to actually reflect in your bank account, depending on how quickly your bank processes it and whether your details are accurate.

Sometimes, delays happen, and they’re often due to small but important errors. Here are some of the most common reasons why refunds get delayed:

Incorrect or non-validated bank account details

Minor errors or mismatches in the ITR

ITR not e-verified

Discrepancies noticed by the Income Tax Department requiring clarification

In such cases, the department may send you an email or SMS. It’s important to check your registered email regularly to ensure you haven’t missed any communication. If your bank account is already pre-validated on the income tax portal, the chances of delay are much lower and tracking becomes easier.

Now, if you’re waiting and want to check your refund status, here’s how to do it:

Visit the official Income Tax website: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in

Log in using your PAN (as the user ID) and password

Go to the ‘e-File’ tab

Click on ‘Income Tax Returns’ and then select ‘View Filed Returns’

You’ll see a list of your filed returns

Click on ‘View Details’ next to the relevant return to see your refund status

Alternatively, you can also check the refund status on the NSDL portal by visiting https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refund-status-pan.html. You’ll need to enter your PAN and assessment year to see the current status.

If your refund has still not arrived after 5 weeks, and your ITR is verified, it’s time to take a closer look. Start by reviewing the status on the portal. Then check your inbox for any messages or alerts from the department. If something needs to be corrected, do it as soon as possible. Once any issues are resolved, the refund is usually processed fairly quickly.

Also, make sure that the bank account you’ve provided is both valid and pre-validated, and is capable of receiving NEFT or RTGS payments. These small checks can save you from long delays.

Lastly, if everything is done right — your ITR is filed, verified, error-free, and your bank details are in order — then there’s nothing to worry about. Refunds are often just a matter of time. Patience, along with a bit of follow-up, is usually all it takes.
