Theobroma’s Journey: From One-Room Bakery to a Potential Billion-Dollar Exit
Brownie Empire Theobroma, Built by Two Mumbai Sisters, Sells 90% Stake to ChrysCapital in ₹2,410 Crore Deal
Theobroma founders Kainaz and Tina Messman are set for a landmark exit, marking a 20-year journey from a single bakery to a multi-crore success story.
Theobroma, the beloved Indian bakery brand known for its brownies and European-style desserts, is on the brink of a landmark acquisition. This could make it one of the largest cash exits in India’s food industry, setting a new standard for homegrown brands. Founded in 2004 by sisters Kainaz Messman Harchandrai and Tina Messman Wykes, Theobroma began as a modest, one-room bakery in Colaba, Mumbai.
A Dream Born from Passion
Kainaz, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, conceived the idea for Theobroma after a back injury ended her tenure as a pastry chef at Oberoi Udaivilas. Inspired by their mother’s home-based baking business, Kainaz and Tina set out with a focus on high-quality ingredients and “affordable luxury.” Their father contributed the initial capital of ₹1.5 crore, and they opened their first café on Dussehra 2004.
Filling a Market Gap
In the early 2000s, India’s bakery scene was still evolving, and high-quality options were scarce. By offering premium desserts that didn’t strain the budget, Theobroma quickly captured the hearts of urban young adults. However, expansion was initially slow due to funding constraints. It wasn’t until 2014 that they secured their first major investment—a ₹5 crore loan—that enabled them to expand beyond Colaba.
Growth and Recognition
Today, Theobroma has expanded across India, and with a valuation nearing ₹3,500 crore, it has become an icon of quality and innovation. ICICI Ventures, an investor in Theobroma, could see substantial returns if the acquisition goes through. This milestone would not only be a major financial achievement for Kainaz and Tina but also a testament to their dedication and resilience in building a trusted national brand.
From a one-room bakery to a multi-crore business, Theobroma’s journey embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship and has set a high bar for homegrown success in India’s food industry.
