Three Bangladeshi Nationals Held from Katraj Flat for Illegal Stay in Pune; Deportation Underway
In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration, the Ambegaon police arrested three Bangladeshi nationals—including a woman—from a rented flat in the Katraj area of Pune on Friday. The arrests followed a tip-off about foreign nationals residing unlawfully in the city.
According to Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zine of the Ambegaon police station, a team was dispatched to the location based on the intelligence received. “We had received specific input about three foreigners staying in a flat in Katraj without legal documents. Acting on this, our team conducted a raid and took the trio into custody,” he said.
Upon questioning, the individuals revealed that they were from Khulna and Norail districts of Bangladesh. None of them could produce valid identification or permits allowing them to live in India.

The 22-year-old woman had reportedly arrived in Pune just two weeks ago, while the two men—aged 32 and 33—had been working at a local poultry shop. One of the men, aged 33, was found to have a prior history of illegal stay in the country. “This individual had been detained earlier by Navi Mumbai police on similar charges and was later released on bail. We are currently investigating the reasons he wasn’t deported following that case,” Inspector Zine added.
Police have launched the deportation process for all three individuals, who are believed to have crossed the international border in search of employment opportunities.
In a related development, the police have also taken action against the owner of the flat where the trio was residing. Authorities said the landlord failed to conduct the legally required background verification before renting out the property, which constitutes a punishable offense.
A formal case has been registered, and further investigations are currently underway.
