Singapore leads with lightning speeds, while India lags at 78th despite being the world’s second-biggest online market

In today’s digital age, internet speed is no longer a luxury but a basic necessity, from streaming content to working remotely, seamless connectivity defines modern life. A new Worldwide Broadband Speed League 2025 report by Cable.co.uk, based on over 1.3 billion speed tests conducted between January and June 2025, reveals the top 10 countries with the fastest mobile internet in the world.

Global Leaders in Internet Speed
The rankings show that Asia and the Middle East dominate the leaderboard, with Singapore securing the top spot:

  1. Singapore – 278.4 Mbps (1GB download in 29 seconds)
  2. Hong Kong – 273.0 Mbps (30 seconds)
  3. Monaco – 261.5 Mbps (31 seconds)
  4. Switzerland – 234.3 Mbps (34 seconds)
  5. Denmark – 229.1 Mbps (35 seconds)
  6. South Korea – 224.7 Mbps (36 seconds)
  7. Romania – 218.8 Mbps (37 seconds)
  8. France – 213.6 Mbps (38 seconds)
  9. Thailand – 205.9 Mbps (39 seconds)
  10. United States – 201.3 Mbps (41 seconds)

These nations not only enjoy blazing-fast connectivity but also demonstrate strong investments in digital infrastructure, making everyday digital consumption smoother and more efficient.

Where Does India Stand?
India, despite having over 900 million internet users, the second largest online market after China ranks 78th globally with an average mobile download speed of 56.2 Mbps. This means downloading a 1GB Netflix video takes more than two minutes, compared to under 40 seconds in the top 10 countries.

Although India has shown progress, with improved rankings in fixed broadband (25th globally at 100.78 Mbps), the mobile internet experience remains relatively slow. Analysts point to uneven digital infrastructure, lower penetration in rural regions, and the sheer scale of India’s population as major challenges.

The Bigger Picture
The report highlights stark global inequalities: while some African countries with speeds below 10 Mbps take over 15 minutes to download the same 1GB video, high-income nations are racing ahead with near-instant speeds.

Interestingly, the United States, the world’s largest economy, sits at 13th overall — ahead of India, but trailing smaller, high-tech nations. Meanwhile, the UAE is singled out as an emerging internet powerhouse, with speeds in its capital growing nearly 100-fold since 2012, and expected to triple further.

The findings underline how internet speed is becoming a measure of national progress, with some countries setting benchmarks in digital efficiency, while others, including India, still grapple with bridging the gap between access and performance.
