Tragedy in Palghar: Four-Storey Building Collapses, Leaving Two Dead and Nine Injured in Maharashtra’s Shocking Incident
Two people died and nine others were injured when a part of a residential building collapsed in Vasai, Maharashtra’s Palghar district, early on Wednesday, August 27. Officials confirmed that the accident took place around 12:05 am when the rear portion of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment on Narangi Road gave way and crashed onto a nearby chawl.
According to the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC), rescuers managed to pull out 11 people from the debris. Two of them, including a one-year-old child, were declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The other nine sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The fire brigade and two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were sent to the site immediately after the collapse. Rescue work continued through the night, with emergency teams using advanced equipment to clear the rubble and search for survivors.
Vivekanand Kadam, District Disaster Management Officer of Palghar, said that the rear section of the apartment fell directly onto the adjoining chawl, trapping several residents inside. He confirmed that 24-year-old Aarohi Omkar Jovil and one-year-old Utkarsha Jovil were found unresponsive under the debris and later declared dead in hospital.

Condition of the Injured
Officials stated that the injured were shifted to different hospitals in Virar and Nalasopara, both located on the outskirts of Mumbai. Medical teams are monitoring their condition. Some victims are reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Authorities have sealed off the area with temporary barricades to keep crowds away and ensure smooth rescue operations. Structural engineers are currently inspecting the remaining part of Ramabai Apartment to check whether it poses further risks.
Officials added that residents from adjoining buildings have been temporarily evacuated as a precautionary step until the structures are declared safe.
VVMC officials said rescuers are focusing on ensuring that nobody remains trapped under the debris. “Our priority is to ensure all residents are accounted for and to prevent any further harm,” a municipal officer stated.
District Disaster Management Officer Vivekanand Kadam said that municipal authorities are working with structural experts to determine the exact cause of the collapse. He added that efforts are underway to assess the stability of nearby structures and to provide necessary support to affected families.
Local authorities are now investigating what led to the collapse of the rear portion of the building. The 18th-century structure had reportedly shown signs of wear and tear earlier, but no official details have yet been released on its maintenance or safety checks. Officials confirmed that once rescue operations are complete, a detailed report will be prepared to establish whether negligence or structural weakness caused the accident.
