Tragic Decision: Pune man jumps into river after argument with spouse
A serious domestic dispute between a couple in Pune ended tragically when the husband, upset after an argument, left home in anger. He sent his wife his last known location before jumping into a river, leading to his death, according to police reports.
The incident took place on Sunday morning when Shrikant V Deshmukh, a businessman in the dry snacks industry, and his wife had a heated argument at their home in Dhankawadi. In a fit of rage, Deshmukh took his car keys and drove about 75 kilometers to the Varandha Ghat area in Raigad district, which had been experiencing heavy rainfall recently.
At a secluded spot in the hills of Varandha Ghat, he parked his car and sent a chilling message to his wife, stating, “I am going to commit suicide,” along with his current location, before cutting off communication. Alarmed by the message, his wife quickly contacted the local police, who then shared the location details with the Bhor Police Station, prompting an urgent response as time was of the essence.
“We quickly organized a rescue team to locate Deshmukh and arrived at the site he had sent to his wife, which was approximately 45 kilometers from the police station. However, he was not there. After searching the area, the team walked an additional five kilometers before discovering his abandoned vehicle,” stated Inspector Pawar.
The police also called in district officials and volunteers from the Bhoiraj Manda to assist in the search. They learned that Deshmukh had jumped from a small bridge into the turbulent river below. The police began a search downstream and, after a few hours, found Deshmukh’s body in the river winding through the Varandha Ghats. They successfully retrieved it around 11 P.M. on Sunday night.
“Early this morning, we brought the body to Bhor, sent it for an autopsy, and later handed it over to the family for the last rites,” Pawar added.
The police have filed an accidental death report and are continuing their investigation into the reasons behind Deshmukh’s tragic decision. He is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
According to Inspector Pawar, initial questioning of the wife and others revealed that the couple had a significant argument at home. Following this dispute, Deshmukh left in anger and drove to Raigad district, where he ultimately took his own life.
