In the past nine months, from January to September 2024, 68 people (63 men and five women) have lost their lives in over 150 accidents on Pune-Nagar Road. The road, notorious for fatal accidents, sees more than 100 deaths annually, according to Pune traffic police. The latest tragedy on October 6 follows the September 24 death of a 23-year-old engineer who also lost his life in a similar accident on this road.

On Sunday, October 6, a 32-year-old woman riding pillion on a bike was tragically crushed to death by a speeding dumper on Ahmednagar Road, while her husband, who was riding the bike, sustained serious injuries. This accident adds to the growing number of fatalities on Pune’s Ahmednagar Road, which has become a dangerous stretch due to speeding dumpers and heavy vehicles.

Local residents and commuters are increasingly fearful of crossing Nagar Road due to the high risk of accidents. Despite a ban on heavy vehicles between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., many still speed through the area, leading to deadly crashes.

The stretch from Viman Nagar Chowk to Khandve Nagar falls under the jurisdiction of the Airport police station, while the section from Khandve Nagar to Perne Phata is under the Lonikand police station. This year alone, 11 people have died in 79 accidents within the Airport police limits, and 54 men and nine women have died in accidents within the Lonikand police station’s jurisdiction.

The increasing number of fatalities on Ahmednagar Road highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and speed regulations, as the road continues to claim lives despite the restrictions on heavy vehicle movement.
