Travel to Konkan Gets Easier: Kashedi Ghat Tunnel on Mumbai-Goa Highway to Open by May 15
Holiday-goers heading to Konkan this summer are in for smoother and quicker travel, as the long-awaited Kashedi Ghat tunnel on the Mumbai-Goa highway is set to become fully operational by May 15. This crucial infrastructure upgrade is expected to greatly cut down travel time and enhance road safety.
Final Work Underway, Power Supply Activated
The 2-kilometer tunnel, which forms a key link between Poladpur (Raigad) and Kashedi (Khed, Ratnagiri), is in its final phase of completion. National Highways Authority engineer Pankaj Gosavi confirmed that power supply has already been activated on the Poladpur end, and the remaining electrical work will be completed within the next 15 days.
Minor leak issues inside the tunnel are currently being addressed. Authorities are confident the tunnel will be ready for full public use by mid-May, in time for the holiday rush.
Travel Time Cut from 45 Minutes to Just 15
With the addition of the tunnel and the connected 9-kilometer stretch, travelers will avoid the steep and time-consuming detour through Kashedi Ghat, which typically takes 40–45 minutes. Once the new route is open, the journey between Poladpur and Kashedi will take just 10–15 minutes.
200 Streetlights for Enhanced Safety
To improve visibility and ensure safety, around 200 streetlights are being installed along the tunnel and approach roads. Equipment is already in place, and installation is expected to finish in about three weeks. Construction teams are working around the clock to meet the deadline.
24/7 Power and Leak-Resistant Design
The tunnel will feature a continuous 24-hour power supply, supporting both lighting and ventilation. Grouting technology is being used to prevent water leakage—an essential step ahead of the upcoming monsoon.
A Major Relief for Holiday Travelers
The opening of the Kashedi Ghat tunnel marks a major milestone in the Mumbai-Goa highway development. For thousands of travelers, especially during vacations and festivals, it means less fuel consumption, reduced congestion, and safer, faster commutes.
