Trekking Banned Across Jammu & Kashmir Amid Security Fears: Major Blow to Adventure Tourism

In a major setback for adventure enthusiasts, the Jammu and Kashmir government has imposed a blanket ban on all trekking activities across the Union Territory, citing heightened security concerns following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

As summer typically marks the beginning of the trekking season in the Himalayan region, this decision has left thousands of trekkers disappointed. Jammu and Kashmir, known for its pristine alpine landscapes and challenging mountain trails, has long been a favorite destination for both domestic and international adventure seekers.

The ban follows a deadly militant attack earlier this month that shook the Pahalgam area, prompting authorities to introduce stringent security measures across the region. A senior official from the Forest Department, requesting anonymity, confirmed that trekking activities have been suspended until further notice. He emphasized that any future decision to reopen the trails will depend on continuous evaluation of the security situation.

In an official directive, police departments across Jammu and Kashmir have been instructed to monitor trekking routes closely and compile comprehensive lists as part of the region’s intensified security protocol.

Popular Trekking Routes Affected

The trekking ban impacts numerous trails across the picturesque valleys of Baramulla, Kupwara, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur, Kishtwar, and the Chenab region. Some of the most popular treks now off-limits include:

  • Kashmir Great Lakes Trek: A breathtaking trail featuring multiple high-altitude lakes.
  • Tarsar Marsar Trek: Famous for its twin alpine lakes nestled amidst lush meadows.
  • Tulian Lake Trek: A scenic journey to a crystal-clear glacial lake near Pahalgam.
  • Nafran Valley Trek: Celebrated for its untouched beauty and serene landscapes.
  • Warwan Valley Trek: A remote trail rich in cultural and natural heritage.
  • Pir Panjal Lakes Trek: Offering panoramic views of some of the Himalayas’ most isolated lakes.

Adventure Tourism Takes a Hit

The suspension of trekking activities comes at a time when adventure tourism in Jammu and Kashmir had been experiencing a steady revival post-pandemic, with increasing numbers of trekkers drawn to the region’s unspoiled terrains. Travel operators and adventure tourism stakeholders fear the ban could significantly impact the local economy, which heavily depends on seasonal tourism.

Authorities have urged trekkers and travel companies to remain patient and comply with the guidelines until security conditions improve.
