What began as a frightening morning quickly turned into an unusual — and ultimately harmless — hospital story for a 42-year-old man in the UK. Tommy Lynch was shocked to discover that his skin had turned a vivid shade of blue after waking up one day, leaving him fearing something was seriously wrong.

According to reports, Lynch felt unusually exhausted that morning and was alarmed when he noticed the dramatic change in his skin colour. Concerned for his health, a friend who works as a carer immediately took him to the nearest hospital. At the emergency department, medical staff reacted quickly, placing him on oxygen while doctors began investigating the cause of his condition.

The situation took an unexpected turn during the examination. A doctor cleaned Lynch’s arm with an alcohol swab, only to see the cotton pad turn blue almost instantly. That simple test revealed the truth — the colour wasn’t coming from his body at all.

It turned out the culprit was a new set of navy blue bedsheets. Lynch had been sleeping on them for two nights without washing them first, allowing excess dye to transfer onto his skin.

Looking back, Lynch compared his appearance to a character from Avatar, turning what had been a worrying experience into something much lighter. Once doctors realized there was no medical issue, the mood in the room shifted, and the staff reportedly found humor in the bizarre situation.

He recalled, “The doctors told me they had never seen anyone that shade of blue who was still perfectly fine. I honestly looked like something out of Avatar. The moment they wiped my arm and saw the colour come off, everything made sense. I felt embarrassed, but they said it gave them a rare moment of laughter in A&E.”

Lynch described how people in the emergency department stared at him in disbelief as he tried to explain what had happened. The bedsheets, a king-size set gifted by his friend Del, were something he had used straight out of the packaging, unaware that new sheets should be washed beforehand to prevent dye transfer.

After the hospital visit, he reassured his mother that he was safe, although a brief misunderstanding due to poor phone signal initially caused her to worry.

Even after discovering the cause, the blue tint didn’t disappear right away. Lynch said it took several baths over the course of nearly a week for the colour to completely fade. “People kept giving me strange looks while the colour slowly washed off. The bathwater kept turning blue each time. The first thing I did when I got home was wash those sheets properly — and I haven’t turned blue again since,” he said.
