Mumbai, July 27, 2025: A high-level meeting of municipal commissioners from cities under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was held to discuss the implementation of an integrated parking system across the metropolitan region.
The objective is to streamline road traffic, reduce congestion, and bring order to urban mobility. During the meeting, it was emphasized that a unified parking framework is crucial for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and that the Urban Development Department should initiate necessary policy reforms focused on parking infrastructure.
Going forward, municipal corporations will be required to designate dedicated parking spaces in their development plans. Accordingly, the Urban Development Department has been directed to amend existing regulations and issue a comprehensive plan incorporating 14 new recommendations to municipal bodies within the MMR.
Municipal corporations were advised to develop “Pay and Park” systems on open plots to prevent traffic jams. To enhance convenience and reduce human intervention, parking systems should be Fastag-enabled. Authorities were also instructed to keep parking charges affordable to encourage greater public usage.
Considering the acute shortage of land in metropolitan areas, officials recommended developing underground parking facilities beneath gardens and parks. The Thane Municipal Corporation has already implemented such a model, which has been hailed as a successful pilot and is now being proposed for replication across other civic bodies.
The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary of the Transport Department Sanjay Sethi, Additional Secretary of the Urban Development Department Asim Gupta, Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, and commissioners from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Panvel, Mira-Bhayandar, and Vasai-Virar municipal corporations.
