Pune, March 20, 2026: Vehicle registrations in Pune have dropped this year during the festive period of Gudi Padwa, a time that typically sees a surge in automobile purchases. The latest data shows a noticeable decline in both conventional and electric vehicle registrations compared to last year.

Between March 7 and March 19, 2026, a total of 11,937 vehicles were registered in the city. In contrast, during a similar period last year—from March 18 to March 28, 2025—registrations had reached 13,190, indicating a significant fall.

Two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of registrations, but even this segment saw a decline. Motorcycle registrations dropped from 8,260 units last year to 7,986 this year. Similarly, car registrations fell sharply from 3,332 to 2,660 units over the same period.

Other categories, including buses, auto-rickshaws, goods carriers, and tractors, also recorded lower numbers. However, there was a slight increase in registrations under tourist taxis and miscellaneous vehicle categories.

Electric vehicles (EVs), which have been gaining popularity in recent years, also experienced a downturn. Registrations fell from 2,124 units in 2025 to 1,530 in 2026. The decline was particularly evident in electric two-wheelers and cars.

The data suggests that the usual festive boost in vehicle purchases was weaker this year. Industry observers believe that market slowdown or broader economic factors may have influenced consumer demand.
