Vidya Balan Nails the Timing: Shares Marathi Reel Amid Hindi Language Row
Actress embraces regional pride with Bhau Kadam’s dialogue and Irakal saree look, ahead of her role in ‘Raja Shivaji’
As Maharashtra continues to debate the imposition of Hindi in school curriculums, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has caught the spotlight with impeccable timing, by sharing a reel in Marathi on her Instagram. Draped in a traditional Irakal saree, Balan lip-syncs to a popular comedic dialogue by Marathi actor Bhau Kadam, showcasing a rural Marathi woman’s look for the video.
The move comes just months after the state government’s controversial decision to make Hindi mandatory from Class 1 to 4, which was later rolled back following public backlash. However, the administration is still urging students to learn a third language apart from Marathi and English, drawing criticism from opposition leaders who accuse the government of pushing Hindi through the backdoor.
Vidya Balan’s reel, captioned, “This is the time to shoot a reel in Marathi. Because I am shooting for a Marathi film,” hints at her involvement in a regional project and resonates with the current mood in the state, subtly reinforcing cultural identity.
On the professional front, Balan has confirmed her role in Riteish Deshmukh’s highly anticipated film ‘Raja Shivaji’, which is currently under production. The historical drama also features Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, and Genelia Deshmukh. The film is slated for release on May 1, 2026.
