Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party surges past majority mark, reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a dramatic political shift as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made a stunning debut in the 2026 Assembly elections. Early trends indicate that the party has crossed the majority mark of 118 seats and is leading comfortably across the state, positioning itself to form the next government.

As counting progressed, TVK quickly established a strong lead, reportedly ahead in over 100 constituencies and even touching around 170 seats in early projections. Traditional powerhouses, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have been trailing significantly, marking a major political upset.

Vijay himself is leading from key constituencies, including Tiruchirappalli (East) and Perambur, reinforcing his personal popularity translating into electoral success. In one of the biggest surprises, TVK leader V S Babu is also leading against incumbent Chief Minister MK Stalin in Kolathur, signalling a deep shift in voter sentiment.

This performance is being seen as unprecedented in Tamil Nadu’s political history. No party has managed to come to power within just two years of its formation. Even iconic figures like M G Ramachandran took several years to establish dominance after launching their political platforms.

Observers say Vijay’s focused political strategy played a key role. Unlike some past actor-politicians, he stepped away from films to fully commit to politics, building a clear and consistent campaign across regions. His approach appears to have resonated with voters looking for an alternative to established parties.

The results also highlight a broader churn in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK gaining traction across diverse regions, including areas traditionally dominated by rival alliances. If the trends hold, Vijay could become the latest film star to successfully transition into a powerful political leader in the state.

While final results are still awaited, the early leads suggest that Tamil Nadu may be on the brink of witnessing one of its most significant electoral transformations in decades.
