Kerala – In a dramatic incident on Wednesday evening, a car carrying seven members of a family plunged into the Chaliyar River while attempting to board the Jankar ferry from Chaliyam to Beypore. The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when the vehicle, reportedly reversing onto the ferry, lost control and slipped into the water.

The car belonged to Kuzhikkatt Muhammad Hanifa and his family, residents of Chettippadi in Parappanangadi. Inside the vehicle were three children, three women, and one man — all of whom faced a terrifying ordeal as the car sank into the river.

Fortunately, quick action by fellow passengers, local residents, and the coastal police averted a tragedy. An immediate rescue effort was launched, and everyone inside the submerged car was pulled out to safety. A fire brigade team from Meenchanda also rushed to the scene and supported the rescue operation.

The rescued family members were promptly taken to a private hospital for medical care. The operation was spearheaded by Chaliyam Coastal Sub-Inspector P. Harish, with key contributions from officers K. Rajesh, P. Mithun, and Haris. Later, with the help of a crane, the car was retrieved from the river. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures at ferry boarding points, especially during busy hours.
