Walk This Way — Pune’s Most Walkable Streets and Why They Matter
Walk This Way — Pune’s Most Walkable Streets and Why They Matter
A nice walk always serves as the perfect de-stressor. In a city filled with traffic and 2-wheeler chaos, a peaceful walk in the perfect street can make your day.
To find the perfect resort from urban chaos, MG Road in Camp is one of Pune’s oldest and most storied streets, a stretch that combines heritage eateries, street markets, and shops that have been run by the same families for over a hundred years. Vendors line both sides, the smell of freshly baked bread drifts from Marzorin, and the pavement is wide enough just barely to stop, look, and longer without being pushed along.
FC Road tells a different story for the newer generation. Pune’s most youthful street is a bustling hub of street shopping, iconic eateries and impromptu street performances — with Vaishali and Goodluck anchoring one end and hundreds of small vendors filling every inch between. On a Saturday evening it is as close to a shopping spree as Pune gets, full of college students who have nowhere specific to be and are entirely content about it.

For early risers who cycle, walk or jog, Bund Garden Road, with its tree canopy and peaceful environment, comes closest among the city’s newer streets to getting this right.
The transformation is not limited to the old city. JM Road in Deccan, redesigned under Pune’s Smart City Mission, now has wide footpaths, dedicated cycle tracks, children’s play areas, and organised vendor spaces — and a Walking Happiness Index score that urban planners cite as one of the highest in the country. Aundh’s DP Road followed the same model. Prabhat Road never needed redesigning — its tree cover and residential character kept it human-scale long before anyone used the word walkability.
College students prefer the bustle around the city, so they tend to go to crowded places like camp or MG Road. But old souls, they prefer the peaceful life- and thankfully, Pune has the perfect streets for both.
