Warning: A WhatsApp Image Can Empty Your Bank Account – Here’s How to Stay Safe

A scary new scam is spreading in India and all it takes is downloading one picture on WhatsApp. A 28-year-old man from Jabalpur lost ₹2 lakh just by opening an image that was forwarded to him. There were no links to click, no phone calls just a simple-looking picture.

What’s Happening?

Hackers are using a trick called steganography. This means they hide a virus (malware) inside a normal-looking image. When you download the image, the virus secretly installs on your phone. It can then:

  • Steal your passwords
  • Read your OTPs
  • Access your bank account
  • And steal your money

Why Is It So Dangerous?

Most antivirus apps can’t catch this virus because it is hidden inside an image. It doesn’t look or act like normal viruses. That’s why it’s hard to detect and very dangerous.

In the Jabalpur case, the virus worked quietly in the background. It collected personal information and let the hackers steal ₹2 lakh without any warning.

How You Can Stay Safe

You don’t need to panic. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Turn Off Auto-Download on WhatsApp
Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download > Turn off for all file types.
  2. Don’t Download Images from Strangers
If you don’t know the person who sent the picture, don’t open or save it.
  3. Change Group Settings
Only allow your contacts to add you to WhatsApp groups. Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Groups > Select “My Contacts.”
  4. Never Share Sensitive Information on WhatsApp
Don’t send passwords, OTPs, or bank details over WhatsApp — even to friends or family — without checking first.

Pune Traders Oppose Additional 1% User Charge on Agricultural Market Transactions, Demand Withdrawal of Circular

Pune, June 3: Traders' organizations across Maharashtra have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the circular imposing an additional 1% user charge on transactions in the grain and agricultural produce markets under the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC).

Speaking on the issue, Saurabh Shekhar Kunjir, President of the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Adte Association, Pune, said that the new levy has triggered concern among traders and market stakeholders across the state. He urged the government to reconsider the decision and withdraw the circular.

The Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Adte Association has also extended its support to the Poona Merchant Chamber Association ian opposing the additional user charge. Traders believe that the extra financial burden could adversely affect market operations and increase costs for stakeholders involved in agricultural produce trading.

The associations have appealed to the state government to review the policy and take a decision that safeguards the interests of traders and the agricultural marketing sector.
