Luxury aircraft-style interiors draw praise and concern over maintenance and civic sense

India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is gearing up for launch, offering long-distance travellers a premium experience with aircraft-inspired interiors, modern amenities and enhanced safety systems. The prototype, unveiled in New Delhi, features first-class sleeper cabins, ergonomic seating, automatic doors, reading lights, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB charging points, digital display panels, and sensor-based lighting.

Designed to run at a speed of 160 km per hour, the train is expected to operate first on the Delhi–Patna route. It will reportedly have a 16-coach configuration, including eleven AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches and one AC First Class coach, accommodating around 1,128 passengers with 823 sleeper berths.

Online reactions to the train’s interiors have been mixed. While many praised the futuristic design and expressed pride in India’s engineering progress, others raised concerns about whether such luxury could be maintained in public transport. Several social media users pointed out that the interiors look “too clean for India,” citing issues like littering, vandalism and gutka spitting.

Some netizens suggested higher ticket prices to limit access to passengers with better civic responsibility, while others joked about introducing a “civic score” system—similar to a credit score—to determine eligibility for premium services. Comments ranged from admiration for the airline-like ambience to scepticism about stains, misuse and maintenance challenges once the train begins regular service.

Despite the debate, excitement remains high, with many eagerly waiting to experience India’s first sleeper Vande Bharat. Fares are expected to be 10–15% higher than Rajdhani Express prices, depending on route and travel class. Authorities have yet to announce an official launch date.

The new sleeper model marks another step in modernising India’s railway network, blending comfort, speed and technology but its long-term success may depend not just on design, but on how responsibly it is used by passengers.
