The much-anticipated prototype of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train was officially presented today, promising to elevate long-distance rail travel in India. The prototype, showcased at BEML’s facility by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is set to undergo rigorous testing over the next ten days before it embarks on further trials. Passenger services are anticipated to commence in approximately three months.
This new train, designed by BEML, is an upgrade from the existing Vande Bharat trains and is expected to surpass the Rajdhani Express in terms of comfort, speed, and safety. With a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph and a testing speed of 180 kmph, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train features enhanced acceleration and deceleration, providing a smoother ride compared to its predecessors.
The trainset comprises 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC First Class coach, offering a total of 823 berths. The interior design includes GFRP panels and modern amenities such as automatic passenger doors, sensor-based communication doors, and ergonomically designed toilets.
Passenger comfort is a top priority, with the Vande Bharat Sleeper train equipped with features like integrated reading lights with USB ports, modular pantries, and special berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers. The AC First Class coach also offers showers with hot water for added luxury. Additionally, the train is built with advanced safety features, including crashworthy buffers and couplers, and adheres to the highest fire safety standards, EN45545 HL3.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to revolutionize overnight rail travel on key routes such as Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata, though the exact routes are yet to be confirmed. With its blend of cutting-edge technology and passenger-centric design, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is set to mark a new chapter in India’s rail travel history.
