Not from Bollywood, this South Indian gem with an IMDb rating of 8.2 delivers eerie suspense and jaw-dropping twists.
If you’re a fan of nail-biting crime thrillers that keep you glued to your seat, here’s a film you shouldn’t miss. With a runtime of just 1 hour and 45 minutes, this South Indian movie opens with a chilling double murder and unravels a story so gripping that viewers found it hard to even blink, let alone look away. And yes, it boasts a stellar 8.2 IMDb rating.
The movie is Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru (also known as D-16), a Tamil-language crime thriller released in 2016 and directed by the then 22-year-old Karthick Naren. Featuring Rahman in the lead alongside Prakash Vijayaraghavan, Ashwin Kkumar, and Anjana Jayaprakash, the film didn’t just win hearts, it shook audiences with its psychological depth and shocking plot turns.
Made on a modest budget of Rs 2.5 crore, Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru grossed nearly Rs 37 crore worldwide and was later released in Telugu and Hindi. Its layered narrative, told through flashbacks and shifting perspectives, created a sense of eerie suspense rarely seen in debut films.

The plot follows a retired police officer recounting the most disturbing case of his career—one involving a couple’s mysterious deaths and an investigation that spirals into revelations that are as disturbing as they are unexpected. With every new scene, the film teases the truth, until the climax hits with goosebump-inducing force.
The movie’s success even led to a Kannada remake titled Aa Drushya in 2019. But it’s the original Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru that continues to be remembered for redefining indie crime thrillers in Indian cinema.
