Simple, cost-free home remedy helps keep balconies clean and bird-free while adding a touch of creativity.

Pune: If pigeons have turned your balcony into a mess, littering around and ruining your flower pots, here’s a surprisingly easy way to get rid of them — without spending a rupee. YouTuber Savita Shekhawat has shared a few tried-and-tested, eco-friendly home remedies that not only help shoo away pigeons but also enhance the look of your home.

The most effective among them, she says, is using black polythene bags. Simply tie a thread to both ends of a long black bag or to the handles of a smaller vegetable bag and hang it where pigeons usually perch — on balconies, window grills, or ledges. When the wind blows, the black bags flutter, resembling an unknown dark object or predator. Startled, pigeons immediately fly away. “It’s important to use only black polythene — other colours don’t have the same effect,” Shekhawat emphasizes.

For those who worry that hanging polythene bags might spoil the look of their balcony, Shekhawat suggests replacing them with wind chimes. Their sound, pleasant to human ears but irritating to pigeons, serves as a natural repellent. Hanging a few wind chimes at key spots in your balcony or terrace keeps the area both peaceful and bird-free.

Another classic method she recommends is using old CDs. Tie a string through the centre of each CD and hang them around your balcony. When sunlight hits the shiny surface, the reflected light startles pigeons, discouraging them from returning. Arranging the CDs in patterns can even make your balcony look creative and vibrant.

Beyond these tricks, Shekhawat highlights one essential rule — cleanliness. Pigeons return to places where they find safety, food, or traces of their droppings. Keeping balconies, window sills, and terraces clean helps break this cycle. Never leave food or water outside, and clean droppings promptly to prevent pigeons from marking the space as their territory.

These simple household solutions — black bags, wind chimes, and recycled CDs — together form a low-cost, aesthetic, and effective way to reclaim your home from the city’s ever-growing pigeon population.
