23.3-km corridor with 23 stations to be completed by March 2026; PMRDA’s role to end after current phase
Pune: The state government has officially handed over the responsibility of expanding the 23.3-km Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line to the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Mahametro). The project, which was initially undertaken by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is now in its final stage, with over 90 percent of the work already completed.
According to PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, the expansion of the metro corridor will henceforth be managed solely by Mahametro. “The state government has given the responsibility of the metro expansion project to Mahametro. Therefore, the ongoing work from Maan-Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar will be completed under their authority,” he stated.
The 23.3-kilometer-long metro line will feature 23 stations and has been developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with Tata-Siemens as the private partner. Designed to handle around a thousand passengers per train, this corridor aims to significantly improve connectivity between the city’s IT hub in Hinjawadi and the central business district of Shivajinagar.
Earlier this year, in July, the first trial run of the metro was successfully conducted between Maan Depot and PMR-4 station. The project is expected to be fully operational by March 2026. Being a PPP-based initiative, the entire route will commence operations in a single phase, from Maan-Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar.
The stations on this line will be as follows:
- Megapolis Circle
- Embassy Quadron Business Park
- Dohler
- Infosys Phase 2
- Wipro Phase 2
- Pal India
- Shivaji Chowk
- Hinjawadi
- Wakad Chowk
- Balewadi Stadium
- NICMAR
- Ram Nagar
- Lakshmi Nagar
- Balewadi Phata
- Baner village
- Baner
- Agricultural Research
- Sakal Nagar
- Savitribai Phule Pune University
- RBI
- College of Agriculture
- Shivajinagar
- Civil Court
Officials noted that while PMRDA has played a key role in initiating and overseeing much of the construction, the government’s recent order transfers the responsibility for further metro expansion projects in Maharashtra to Mahametro. Meanwhile, expansion projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will continue to be handled by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Once the ongoing Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar line is completed, PMRDA’s role in this metro corridor will officially conclude, marking a transition point for the city’s urban transport development under Mahametro’s expertise.
