Experts predicted that the mild winter temperatures would likely persist into the New Year, potentially having an impact on the wheat crop in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

An extended range forecast by IMD has indicated that higher-than-normal night temperatures are likely to persist into next year for certain regions of Maharashtra, most of the northwest and adjacent central India, and over some parts of northeast India, Gujarat, and Bihar.

From December 29, 2023 to January 4, 2024, the minimum temperatures in these areas could be two to three degrees Celsius above normal. This week has also seen above-normal trends in some parts of northwest India.

There are currently 3–7°C above average nighttime temperatures in several areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Maharashtra (not including Vidarbha). Indeed, the extended range outlook also predicts 3–4°C above average day temperatures in several regions of northwest and east India starting on December 29 of next week. Thus, mild winter weather is predicted for some areas of the nation through January 3, 2024.

According to a senior official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, the maximum temperature in northwest and east India is probably going to be 3–4°C higher than average through January 3–4.
