Pune: Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, has forecasted an active and vigorous monsoon over south-central Konkan and adjacent ghats in Maharashtra. According to Dr Kashyapi, a trough at mean sea level persists off the Maharashtra-Kerala coast, leading to significant weather activity in the region.

The forecast indicates the presence of a strong westerly wind from the Arabian Sea and the presence of packed isobars, which are creating a huge convergence due to the Sahyadri range. This convergence is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Maharashtra.

Orange Alert Issued:

In light of these conditions, an orange alert has been issued for the districts of Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, and the ghats of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur from June 23 to June 27. The alert warns residents to prepare for potentially severe weather and heavy rainfall.

Dr Kashyapi also noted the likely formation of a low-pressure area around June 27 in the Bay of Bengal. The movement of this low-pressure area is expected to further strengthen the monsoon, bringing more widespread rain to the region.

These meteorological conditions and forecasts come at a critical time, as many parts of Maharashtra have already been experiencing deficient rainfall, adversely affecting agricultural activities and exacerbating drought-like conditions. The anticipated heavy rains could bring much-needed relief to the region but also pose risks of flooding and landslides.

With heavy rains and potential flooding on the horizon, residents and local authorities must take necessary precautions to mitigate risks and ensure safety during this period of intense monsoon activity.
