Pune, November 30, 2024: Over the past few days, Pune city and its surrounding areas have experienced an intensified cold wave. While hill stations like Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala are renowned for their cool climate, current observations reveal that Pune’s temperatures are lower than these popular tourist destinations.

On Friday, Pune recorded a low of 9.5°C, compared to 10.5°C in Mahabaleshwar and 17.7°C in Lonavala, according to meteorological data. Experts attribute this unusual pattern to the impact of Cyclone Fengal, developing over the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to primarily affect coastal Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. However, it has also influenced weather in Maharashtra by reducing atmospheric moisture and fostering dry conditions.

The reduced humidity and increased flow of cold northern winds have caused a consistent drop in both day and night temperatures in Pune. Experts noted that while Pune’s minimum temperature is falling sharply, hill stations like Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala are affected differently. Their elevated terrain disrupts the northern wind flow, leading to relatively higher temperatures compared to Pune.

Pune’s Shivajinagar recorded the season’s lowest temperature at 9.5°C, which is also the coldest November reading in four years. For the first time this year, the city experienced three consecutive days of single-digit temperatures.

Experts predict that the cold spell will persist as the northern wind flow remains active, keeping Pune’s temperatures lower than those in nearby hill stations.
