Monsoon magic turns into mayhem as weekend crowds cause massive traffic jam on Sinhagad-Khadakwasla Road.

Pune: The first hints of the monsoon brought welcome showers and unwelcome chaos to Pune’s popular weekend escape route, Sinhagad-Khadakwasla Road. With summer holidays in full swing and light rain creating a perfect backdrop for a scenic drive, thousands of tourists thronged the area on Sunday, resulting in a massive 6.5-kilometre-long traffic jam from Donje to Khadakwasla.

Locals woke up to a light drizzle that continued throughout the morning, drawing visitors who had skipped the area last weekend due to intense heat. By afternoon, the crowd had thickened, with vehicles lining up for over 2 km near the Chowpatty stretch. The situation worsened post 5 PM, when the jam extended all the way to Donje village, choking one of Pune’s key monsoon getaways.

What Caused the Gridlock?

  • Sudden surge in weekend tourists due to the first pre-monsoon showers
  • Narrow roads and wrong
  • parking spaces near popular spots

As the monsoon season begins, the Sinhagad-Khadakwasla belt is once again under pressure. While the scenic drive remains a favourite, authorities face growing public demand for better crowd and traffic management, especially during weekends and holidays. Until then, early departures and alternative routes might be the only way to enjoy the rains without getting stuck in them.
