Veteran Actor and Politician Jaya Bachchan Expresses Objection in Rajya Sabha

Jaya Bachchan, the veteran actor and politician, took strong objection after Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her by her husband’s name. Singh referred to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” during a parliamentary session, leading to Bachchan’s immediate response.

“Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please,” Harivansh Narayan Singh said, calling upon her to speak in the House.

Bachchan responded, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).” Singh then clarified that her name is officially registered as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in Parliament’s records.

“Your full name was written here, I just repeated the same,” Mr. Singh explained.

Bachchan criticized the practice, stating, “This is something new, that women will be recognized by the name of their husbands. They (women) have no existence or achievements of their own.”

Later, Jaya Bachchan addressed the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants at a coaching center in Delhi. She emphasized the importance of avoiding politicization of the incident.

“It’s a very painful incident and we should not bring politics into the matter,” she said.

Three students drowned in the flooded basement of a coaching center in east Delhi last week. The incident has led to student protests and accusations of civic negligence. A political blame game has ensued, with the BJP targeting the Aam Aadmi Party, which governs Delhi and controls the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
