Admins can now share selected old messages with newcomers while maintaining end-to-end encryption

WhatsApp has introduced a new ‘Group Chat History’ feature that allows new members of a group to view selected older messages. The update aims to solve a common issue where newly added members are unaware of previous discussions and important shared information.

Until now, users who joined a WhatsApp group could only see messages sent after they became part of the group. If they needed earlier details, other members had to manually forward messages. With the new feature, group admins and members can share a selected portion of previous chat history with newcomers.

According to the update, users can choose between 25 and 100 messages from the last 24 hours and share them with new members. The number of messages can be selected based on the group’s needs. The process is not automatic. When a new member joins, admins and other participants will see an option to share old messages. Admins can also disable this feature for their group if required.

WhatsApp has stated that privacy and security remain a priority. The shared messages will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only group members can access them. When chat history is shared, all participants will receive a notification mentioning who shared the history and when. These shared messages will be clearly marked and displayed separately with timestamps and sender details for better transparency.

The feature is being rolled out in phases for both Android and iOS users. To access it, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version. Availability may vary depending on region and app version.

Once enabled, new members will be able to seamlessly view shared chat history as part of the conversation timeline. No additional manual settings are required from the new member’s side.

The update is expected to improve the experience in personal, professional and community groups. It can reduce repeated explanations, prevent confusion and help new participants quickly understand the context of discussions. As group chats remain central to WhatsApp usage in many countries, this feature strengthens the platform’s functionality and competitiveness in the messaging space.
