Wild cats, Giant Squirrels to be on display at Rajiv Gandhi Zoo
Citizens of Pune can now see Shekru, leopard cats, rusty spotted cats and wild cats at the city’s Rajiv Gandhi National Zoo in Katraj. There are 10 wild cats, out of which six will be kept on display. There are leopard cats, wild cats, rusty spotted cats along with Shekru kept in the enclosures.
Since the zoo and parks are closed due to the Covid pandemic, the citizens will have to wait to see them. The leopard cats and rusty spotted cats have new enclosures in the zoo. There are three species of cats at present in the zoo, with 10 jungle cats but only two will be put for display. There are a total 20 cages with three cages each for the cats and four for the Giant Indian Squirrel (Shekru).
Shekru is the state animal of Maharashtra and mainly found in the jungles of Bhimashankar, Junnar area of Pune district.
The opening of the breeding center for Shekru and Wild cat was held in presence of Raj Thackeray, president, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol, corporator Vasant More, Sainath Babar, Rupali Thombre, Dr Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner, PMC, Ashok Ghorpade, garden superintendent, PMC and others today.
