The National Commission for Women (NCW) has identified serious lapses in workplace safety and compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act at a Yerawada-based BPO, where 28-year-old employee Shubhada Kodare was murdered.

Findings of the NCW Investigation

The NCW’s fact-finding committee found that while the company had a POSH committee, it lacked proper grievance redressal mechanisms, workplace safety training, and conflict resolution processes. The report, submitted to the Pune police, district magistrate, and the state government, emphasized that these deficiencies contributed to an unsafe work environment.

Kodare was murdered on January 7 in the company’s parking lot by a colleague. Investigators discovered that the accused had previously reported a financial dispute with Kodare to HR, but the issue was neither documented nor escalated, missing crucial warning signs.

Recommendations for Workplace Safety

The NCW committee, comprising experts Meenakshi Negi, BK Sinha, and R Sreelekha, has urged the company to overhaul its safety measures. Key recommendations include:

  • Enhanced Security: Strengthening surveillance, conducting regular safety audits, and improving access controls.
  • Employee Safety Training: Conducting workshops on workplace safety and harassment prevention.
  • Stronger Grievance Redressal: Ensuring complaints are documented and addressed effectively.
  • Mental Health Support: Providing counseling services through external professionals.
  • Collaboration with Authorities: Partnering with law enforcement to assess potential threats and prevent future incidents.

Additionally, the NCW has urged the government to strengthen the Manodhairya scheme, which provides financial and emotional support to victims and their families.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for organizations to prioritize employee safety and implement robust policies to prevent workplace violence.
