An X post about being quoted ₹80,000 rent for a room because it receives natural light has gone viral, reflecting the growing frustration over Bengaluru’s rising rental market.

Bengaluru’s ever-increasing rent prices have once again become the centre of online discussion after a woman shared a startling experience of being quoted ₹80,000 for an apartment with the justification, that the room receives sunlight.

The incident highlights the growing pressure on residents in India’s tech capital, where housing demand continues to surge and even basic living features are now being treated as luxury add-ons.

The woman, Anu (@Escapeplace__), posted about the encounter on X (formerly Twitter), expressing disbelief at the explanation she was given while enquiring about rental accommodation. According to her, the rent seemed unusually high until she was told that natural light was part of the reason behind the premium price.

In her viral post, she wrote: “Bangalore rent would never stop surprising me. What do you mean, ‘ma’am is room me sunlight bhi aati hai to iska rent ₹80,000 hai’?”

Her remark struck a chord with many users, quickly gaining traction as people related it to their own experiences of Bengaluru’s expensive rental market.

Over the past few years, rents across the city have risen sharply, particularly in neighbourhoods popular with working professionals, students, and families moving closer to employment hubs. With demand outpacing supply in several areas, landlords have increasingly been able to command steep prices.

The post sparked a flood of reactions, with users commenting on how ordinary amenities are being marketed as premium features. One user joked, “Some folks would tell you this room has a balcony, so rent is 1 lakh.” Another quipped, “Sunlight is now a premium amenity.”

Others added humour mixed with frustration, pointing out that despite high rents, basic infrastructure issues remain unresolved. A user commented in Hindi, “Lekin afsos paani nahi aata hai phir bhi,” suggesting that even essential services like water supply are often lacking.

The viral moment has reopened conversations about affordability and the challenges of renting in Bengaluru, where the cost of living continues to rise rapidly. For many residents, the idea that sunlight itself could be priced into rent has become a symbol of how extreme the city’s housing market has become.
