MSEDCL Rolls Out Smart TOD Meters With Daytime Power Bill Discounts Across Maharashtra
Mahavitaran’s statewide smart meter campaign aims to improve billing accuracy, reduce complaints, and offer consumers savings through time-based tariff benefits.
Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran, has launched a major statewide drive to install Smart TOD (Time of Day) electricity meters, offering consumers the promise of more accurate billing and potential savings on monthly power costs.
The campaign is being promoted through a special awareness initiative called ‘Smart Meter Fortnight’, being observed from February 9 to February 23. Installation work is underway in several areas, including the Nashik Road region, where MSEDCL staff are actively deploying the new meters.
Smart TOD meters are designed to send electricity consumption readings directly to Mahavitaran’s server, reducing the need for manual meter reading and eliminating common consumer complaints such as incorrect readings, estimated billing, or missed bills due to locked homes.
A key benefit highlighted under the scheme is a tariff concession for domestic consumers. As per approvals from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission, consumers using electricity between 9 am and 5 pm will receive a discount ranging from 80 paise to Re 1 per unit. The concession is expected to help households reduce costs, especially those with higher daytime power usage.
Mahavitaran has clarified that there is no installation charge for these smart meters. The meters are not prepaid, but postpaid, meaning consumers will continue paying their bills at the end of the month based on actual usage, just as they do currently.
Officials have also addressed concerns and misinformation suggesting that smart meters could increase electricity rates. The utility maintains that Smart TOD technology will instead bring transparency and ensure consumers pay only for the electricity they consume.
The meters are expected to be particularly useful for households adopting solar power systems under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme’, as they will allow more accurate tracking of electricity generation, consumption, and grid supply.
In the Nashik Circle alone, over 5.57 lakh Smart TOD meters have already been installed. This includes more than 2.55 lakh meters in Nashik Circle, 78,762 in Malegaon Circle, and over 2.23 lakh in Ahilyanagar Circle. The installations cover domestic, government, defective meter replacements, and new electricity connections.
Mahavitaran noted that replacing old or faulty meters is a routine and legal process, and the transition to smart digital meters is part of ongoing modernization efforts supported through central government grants, without any loan burden on consumers.
With large-scale rollout underway, the Smart TOD meter initiative is expected to improve service delivery, reduce disputes, and encourage more efficient electricity usage across Maharashtra.
