129 Holidays Scheduled for Students, Teachers in Maharashtra Govt Schools This Year
Education department finalises academic calendar after consultation with teachers’ associations
The Maharashtra School Education Department has officially released the holiday and academic schedule for government schools for the 2025–26 academic year. Students and teachers will receive a total of 129 holidays, while schools will remain operational for 236 working days during the session.
According to the circular, schools across most of Maharashtra will reopen on June 16, while those in Vidarbha will resume a week later, on June 23. This calendar has been finalised following discussions with various teachers’ unions to ensure broad consensus.
Compared to last year, the new academic schedule includes one additional holiday, largely due to the presence of 53 Sundays, all of which are non-working days. These Sundays, along with other scheduled breaks and public holidays, contribute to the total count of 129 off days.
Earlier in February, Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh clarified that the academic year would begin on June 16, addressing confusion created by the State Curriculum Framework for School Education (SCF-SE). The SCF-SE had recommended syncing the state’s academic year with the CBSE’s April–March calendar, which led to debates over changing the school start date to April 1.
While Education Minister Pankaj Bhoyar had indicated that the government was exploring the April 1 start for the 2025–26 academic year, teacher unions firmly opposed the proposal. They argued that aligning with the CBSE calendar without factoring in Maharashtra’s unique cultural, climatic, and social contexts would not be practical or beneficial for students and teachers alike.
With the current decision, the academic calendar retains its traditional structure, ensuring stability for schools while addressing feedback from educators across the state.
