Whale Carcass Found at Varsoli Beach, Alibaug; Cause of Death Unknown

NAVI MUMBAI: The carcass of an 18-foot-long Baleen whale washed ashore at Varsoli beach in Alibaug on Sunday morning. Forest officials, along with a veterinary doctor, conducted an on-site inspection. After the necessary formalities, the whale was buried at the beach. The forest department has retained samples for further analysis by experts.

Local fishermen first noticed the whale around 11 AM during high tide and promptly informed the forest department’s mangrove cell. The carcass drifted towards the shore, occasionally pulled back by the sea. Low tide eventually allowed the forest officials to reach the whale. The beach saw a crowd of about 500 people, all eager to catch a glimpse of the giant sea creature.

According to forest department officials, the whale weighed approximately 1,500 kilograms. Range Forest Officer Sameer Shinde stated that the cause of death remains unclear, as there were no visible injuries on the whale’s body.
