Two hundred properties were seized by the Tax Department of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) whose owners had neglected to pay property taxes between April and December 2023.

In addition, the civic body has severed the water connections to 17 residential and commercial properties during this time due to the owners’ non-payment of taxes in spite of notices and warnings.

For the most part, these properties have very high outstanding taxes. According to a senior PCMC officer, the owners will receive another notice and have more time to pay their debts; if they don’t, the seized properties will be auctioned off.

Of the 33,241 property owners who received notices, only 7,000 have paid the Rs 73.2 crore in overdue property taxes thus far, out of the total Rs 584.4 crore in overdue taxes. The total amount of property tax owed by 26,161 property owners to the civic body is Rs 511.25 crore.

On the list of areas from which officials seized 38 properties in default, Phugewadi topped the list, followed by Kiwale (32) and Moshi (29).

According to a senior PCMC official, the town planning department has received information regarding 110 seized properties for appraisal, which will initiate the auction procedure. It consists of both previously seized and properties that were seized during the current fiscal year.
