22 Medical Emergencies During Pune Ganesh Immersion Due to Heat; Women and Drummers Affected
Pune experienced a massive turnout during the immersion of the revered Ganesh idol, leading to emergencies due to extreme heat. Dr. Milind Bhoi, a trustee of the Vighnaharta Nyas, reported that 122 people required urgent medical assistance within the first four hours of the event.
The procession attracted a large number of devotees, especially women, who faced dehydration and fainting spells due to the sweltering sun. Some women collapsed on the road, necessitating immediate care. Emergency medical teams were deployed by Pune Police and Vighnaharta Nyas at various locations, including Bellbag Chowk, Alka Talkies Chowk, SP College Chowk, and Puram Chowk.
Additionally, first aid centers were established near Gokhale Hall on Laxmi Road, near Sweet Home on Kumthekar Road, Narayan Peth Police Station, and at SP College Chowk on Tilak Road.
The event is known for its large crowds, particularly during the initial processions of prominent Ganesh idols. The clear skies contributed to the heat, prompting many to suffer from dehydration while waiting for a glimpse of the idols.
Moreover, incidents occurred where 5 to 6 drummers were injured due to close proximity while playing. They are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The Ganesh immersion procession is a significant cultural event in Pune, drawing participants of all ages.
