In a groundbreaking initiative for environmental protection, 23 prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are banding together to launch the Net Zero campaign. Spearheaded by esteemed environmental scientist Dr. Rajendra Shende and driven youth advocate Piyush Gulve from Nashik, this movement aims to combat pressing global issues like climate change and rising temperatures.

Renowned for their excellence in engineering, technology, and research, the IITs attract some of the brightest minds in the country. Leveraging their expertise and influence, these institutions are rallying behind a cause—environmental preservation.

Dr. Shende, an alumnus of IIT Mumbai and founder of the Green Terre Foundation in Pune, is leading the charge. Under his guidance, a Net Zero workshop was recently conducted at IIT Guwahati, with support from former Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and other esteemed figures. Piyush Gulve, a final-year Chemical Engineering student at IIT Guwahati and vice president of the gymnasium, is actively championing the cause, ensuring the campaign’s implementation across all IIT campuses.

The Net Zero campaign aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India carbon neutral by reducing man-made carbon dioxide emissions. It entails a comprehensive plan to minimize fossil fuel usage, promote renewable energy, and adopt eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction and recycling.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step forward in the global fight against climate change. With the involvement of leading academic institutions like the IITs, the Net Zero campaign sets a powerful example for universities worldwide, inspiring collective action for a sustainable future.
