After biting at least 29 people in less than two hours on a busy Chennai street on Tuesday night, a stray dog was finally beaten to death. The residents of the area thought the dog might be rabid.

The victims—severe injuries from dog bites at GA road, Washermanpet—received treatment at Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital in Chennai. Among them were five children and several elderly people.

According to representatives of the Greater Chennai Corporation, the dog was sent for a post-mortem to the Madras Veterinary College.

A city veterinary officer said that it is still unknown if the dog was rabies-infected or provoked. They are awaiting the report from the post-mortem. Conversely, the individuals who received injuries received their first doses of the anti-rabies vaccine on Tuesday and will receive four more doses. They have all gone back to their homes, and they are keeping a careful eye on them.

The city veterinary officer further stated that the civic body had taken 25 more dogs and five puppies from that area and placed them under observation as a preventative measure prior to receiving the post-mortem report.

In all 16 zones, the organisation uses cars designed especially for this purpose to capture between 80 and 90 dogs every day. Approximately 17,000 dogs have been taken into custody this year in order to be sterilised and vaccinated against rabies.
