Pune, July 13, 2026: A tragic accident during the Ashadhi Wari claimed the lives of four women Varkaris after a speeding truck rammed into a group of pilgrims on the Saswad–Jejuri Road near Belsar Toll Naka on Sunday. Several other Varkaris were injured in the incident, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 500 metres ahead of the Belsar Toll Naka towards Jejuri, near Hotel Shipdeep Lodging. According to preliminary information, the truck, which was accompanying the Dindi of Rangnath Maharaj Pokharbisikar from Loha in Nanded district, hit a group of women Varkaris belonging to a Dindi from Kasbedigraj in Sangli district.
The impact of the collision threw several pilgrims onto the road, triggering panic among the devotees participating in the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. Four women lost their lives in the accident, while multiple others suffered serious injuries.
Local residents, fellow Varkaris, and emergency responders rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to a hospital in Jejuri, where they are undergoing treatment. Police personnel immediately reached the scene, regulated traffic, and began rescue operations.
A case has been registered, and police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are also verifying whether speeding, driver negligence, or a mechanical failure led to the tragedy.
