Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation has sterilised 404 cats in four months. Sharing details about the same, Dr Sarika Funde, veterinary superintendent, PMC said, “Sterilisation of cats is more difficult than dogs. Catching a cat is a tough task as you don’t find it easily on roads like dogs. The cats hid in societies. Trap cages are the best option to catch the cat.”

She said that they got a permit for the process in September. “We have sterilised 404 cats so far. It is being done by a private NGO, which was the only one to come forward to do the task,” she said.

The civic body sterilises cats for free, upon receiving calls from citizens. Stray cats living on society premises and public places are also being sterilised.

“If we get more NGOs on board, then we can speed up the process of sterilisation,” added Funde.
As per May 9, 2019 government order, necessary action has to be taken regarding cat sterilisation.

The order stated, “Generally, a cat gives birth to four to five kittens every three months, thereby increasing their population immensely.”
The civic body pays Rs 1,000 per animal i.e. Rs 800 for the surgery and postsurgical care and Rs 200 for picking and releasing the cat in the same locality.
