A total of 6 teams and 15 officers will be working round-the-clock on both the highways.

Pune: In order to reduce the number of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, both new and old highways, and to instil discipline among the drivers, a 24-hour road safety awareness and enforcement initiative ‘Suraksha’ is being organised by the transport department for the next 6 months from December 1.

In a meeting held on October 17, 2022 under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, all the departments concerned were ordered to implement various measures to prevent loss of life and money on the road, while also creating public awareness.

Accordingly, the transport department has taken up the initiative ‘Suraksha’.

For this activity, a total of 12 teams of officials from the regional transport offices of Mumbai, Pune, Panvel, Pimpri Chinchwad in the motor vehicle department have been formed and 30 officers have been appointed in each team.

6 teams and 15 officers will be working round-the-clock on both the highways. Under road safety awareness and enforcement activities, various measures will be implemented on both the highways.

Accident prone places (black spots) will be surveyed. All measures will be taken for the purpose of road safety and information boards will be displayed for the benefit of drivers.

Immediate action will be taken against illegally parked vehicles and obstructions would be removed. Public awareness announcements will be made at the toll booths on both the highways.

Action will be taken against speeding vehicles through interceptor vehicles, action will also be taken against vehicles moving at slow speed in the wrong lanes.

Actions will be taken against the drivers and passengers traveling without helmet, without seat belt and many such measures will be taken under this initiative.

With the aim of creating road safety, the initiative ‘Suraksha’ has been launched for the first time through the transport department for a period of six months in the state.

Under this initiative, for the first 7 days, public awareness and announcements will be made at the toll booths at Maham on both the highways and through the PA system on vehicles. After that, action will be taken to comply with all the traffic rules.

The cooperation of Maharashtra Road Development Corporation, Public Works Department, Traffic Police Department, Highway Police, NGOs etc. will be sought to carry out the activities successfully.

It has been reported that more than 80 percent of the accidents are due to the negligence of drivers, careless attitude and non-compliance with traffic rules.
